How to Use ChatGPT for Homework Help Without Doing the Work for Your Grandchild

Homework can be one of those moments when being a grandparent raising grandchildren suddenly makes you feel very aware of how much school has changed.

The math looks different.

The vocabulary sounds different.

Assignments may live online.

And sometimes your grandchild looks at you as if you personally invented fractions just to ruin their evening. 😄

ChatGPT can help.

But there is an important difference between using AI to teach a child and using AI to do the child's homework.

At Grandfamily AI, we're aiming for the first one.

The goal is:

Help me understand it so I can help my grandchild learn it.

Not:

Give me the answer so we can be done.

Start With This Homework Prompt

When your grandchild is stuck, try:

My grandchild is in [GRADE] and is working on [SUBJECT]. They are having trouble understanding this problem. Explain the idea in simple language appropriate for their age. Do not simply give the final answer. Teach us one step at a time and pause after each step so we can try it ourselves.

Here is the problem:
[PASTE THE PROBLEM]

That little sentence:

“Do not simply give the final answer”

makes an important difference.

You are telling ChatGPT to become a tutor instead of an answer machine.

If the Explanation Is Still Too Complicated

You can simply say:

Make that easier to understand.

Or:

Explain it as if you were teaching an 8-year-old for the first time.

Or:

Give us a simple example before we try the homework problem.

You do not have to understand ChatGPT's first explanation.

Keep talking to it until the explanation makes sense to both of you.

Ask ChatGPT to Connect the Lesson to Something Your Grandchild Loves

This is one of my favorite tricks.

Suppose your grandchild loves basketball.

Try:

Explain fractions using basketball as the example.

Or perhaps they love mermaids:

Teach this spelling rule using a short mermaid story.

Or video games:

Explain multiplication using a simple video-game example.

The school concept stays the same.

You are simply changing the wrapper.

Sometimes that is enough to make the little lightbulb turn on. ✨

Use ChatGPT to Create Practice Problems

Once your grandchild starts understanding the idea, don't immediately move back to the assignment.

Ask:

Give us three easy practice problems using the same skill. Do not show the answers until we ask for them.

Then let your grandchild try.

Afterward:

Check these answers and explain any mistakes without making the child feel bad.

That turns ChatGPT into a practice partner.

Turn Homework Into a Game

Practice doesn't always have to look like a worksheet.

Try:

Turn this skill into a five-minute game for a [AGE]-year-old. We only have paper, pencils and things normally found around the house.

Or:

Create a silly challenge using these spelling words: [WORDS].

Or:

Turn these vocabulary words into a guessing game we can play together.

This is especially helpful when frustration is starting to climb.

Sometimes the brain simply needs a different doorway into the lesson.

Let Your Grandchild Explain It Back

This is a terrific way to check whether they actually understand something.

After ChatGPT teaches a concept, say:

My grandchild is going to explain this concept back to you in their own words. After they answer, tell us what they understood correctly and gently explain anything they missed.

Then let your grandchild type or speak the explanation.

Teaching something back is often much more revealing than asking:

“Do you understand?”

Because nearly every child on Earth has discovered that the fastest answer to that question is:

“Yes.” 😂

Use ChatGPT for Reading Comprehension

If your grandchild is reading a book or passage, you do not need ChatGPT to summarize the whole assignment for them.

Instead try:

My grandchild just read this passage. Ask them five age-appropriate questions that help check whether they understood the main idea, important details and characters. Ask one question at a time and wait for their answer before giving feedback.

That keeps your grandchild doing the thinking.

Use ChatGPT for Spelling Practice

Try:

My [AGE]-year-old needs to learn these spelling words: [WORDS]. Create a 10-minute practice activity using memory tricks, silly sentences and a short quiz. Do not reveal the correct spelling during the quiz unless they ask for help.

You can also say:

Find the spelling pattern these words have in common and explain it simply.

Now you are helping your grandchild understand why words work the way they do.

Use ChatGPT to Study for a Test

If you have study notes, try:

Turn these notes into a study guide for a [GRADE]-grade student. Organize the most important information first. Then create 10 practice questions. Do not show the answers until the student finishes.

After the practice quiz:

Based on the questions they missed, tell us the three things we should review again.

That is far more useful than studying everything over and over.

What If You Don't Understand the Assignment Either?

This is where ChatGPT can be especially useful for grandparents.

Try:

I am helping my grandchild with this assignment, but I do not understand what the teacher is asking them to do. Explain the instructions to me in plain English. Do not complete the assignment. Tell me what the child is expected to produce.

Sometimes you aren't struggling with the subject at all.

You're struggling with the instructions.

Those are two completely different problems.

A Grandfamily AI Homework Prompt Chain

Instead of asking one question and stopping, use a sequence.

Start with:

Explain what this assignment is asking.

Then:

Teach us the concept in simple language.

Then:

Give us one easy example.

Then:

Give us three practice questions.

Then:

Check our work and explain the mistakes.

Finally:

Ask my grandchild to explain the idea back to you.

That is what I call a Grandfamily AI Prompt Chain.

One small step leads naturally to the next.

What ChatGPT Should Not Do

AI should not become the person doing your grandchild's work.

Be cautious about using it to:

• write an essay the child is supposed to write
• provide answers to a graded worksheet
• solve an entire assignment without teaching
• create work your grandchild then submits as their own
• bypass a teacher's rules about AI use

Schools and teachers may also have their own policies about artificial intelligence.

When you're unsure, ask the teacher.

AI works best here as a tutor, explainer and practice partner.

A Helpful Question to Ask Your Grandchild

After using ChatGPT, ask:

“Can you show me how you would do the next one without ChatGPT?”

That's the test.

If they can, wonderful.

If they can't, you probably need another round of explanation or practice.

Homework Doesn't Have to Turn Into a Battle

You don't need to remember every math rule you learned thirty years ago.

You don't have to understand every new teaching method immediately.

And you don't have to pretend you know something when you don't.
