DIY or Buy? A Grandmother’s Guide to Halloween Costumes on Any Budget Halloween costumes can get surprisingly complicated. Do you buy one? Make one? Spend $20? Spend $100? Start sewing in September? Wait until the week before Halloween and hope your child hasn’t changed their mind three times? Around here, we’re doing a little of both. I’m a longtime sewer, so making a Halloween costume from scratch is something I genuinely enjoy. This year, I’m making one of my granddaughter’s costumes myself. For my teenage granddaughter, however, we decided buying her costume made much more sense. And you know what? Both choices are completely okay. You don’t have to hand-sew a costume for Halloween to feel special. And you don’t have to spend a fortune on a store-bought costume either. The goal is to find something your child or grandchild feels excited to wear — without making Halloween stressful for the adults trying to pull everything together.
