How Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Can Use ChatGPT: A Simple Beginner's Guide
ChatGPT Can Be Much Simpler Than It Sounds
If you are raising grandchildren and keep hearing people talk about ChatGPT, you may be wondering:
What exactly am I supposed to do with it?
The answer is much simpler than you might think.
ChatGPT can become an extra helping brain for everyday family life.
It cannot replace your judgment, experience or love for your grandchildren.
But it can help you organize information, explain confusing things, brainstorm ideas and find the words when your own brain is tired.
Here are some practical ways grandparents raising grandchildren can use it.
1. Get Help Understanding Homework
Sometimes children bring home assignments that look completely different from the way we learned them.
You can paste the question into ChatGPT and say:
My grandchild is in [GRADE]. Explain this problem to me in very simple language so I can help teach it. Do not give us only the answer. Show us how to understand it one step at a time.
You can then say:
“Make that even simpler.”
or:
“Give us one practice problem.”
The goal is to use AI as a tutor, not as a homework-answer machine.
2. Understand School Emails
School emails can be long, confusing and full of dates, instructions and educational language. If teacher emails are the part that makes your head spin, read my step-by-step guide to using ChatGPT to understand a teacher email.
Try:
I am a grandparent raising a school-age grandchild. Explain this school email to me in plain English. Then give me a short checklist of anything I need to do and any dates I need to remember. Here is the email: [PASTE EMAIL]
Before pasting anything, remove private identifying information when possible.
ChatGPT can also help draft a reply.
3. Make Spelling and Studying More Fun
You can turn schoolwork into something your grandchild actually wants to do.
Try:
My [AGE]-year-old grandchild needs to practice these spelling words: [WORDS]. They love [INTEREST]. Create a 10-minute game that makes practicing these words fun.
You can substitute dinosaurs, mermaids, sports, Roblox, animals or whatever your grandchild loves.
4. Plan Meals and Grocery Lists
When 5:00 arrives and your brain says, “Absolutely not,” AI can help. 😄
Try:
I need five inexpensive family dinners for this week. They should be easy, child-friendly and take less than 30 minutes. Reuse ingredients when possible so I waste less food. Then make one grocery list organized by store section.
Or tell ChatGPT what you already have:
I have chicken, pasta, rice, broccoli and cheese. Give me three family dinner ideas using mostly these ingredients.
5. Organize a Busy Week
This is one of my favorite uses.
You can simply brain-dump everything you're trying to remember.
Try:
I am going to give you everything happening in our family this week. Organize it by day. Then make a separate list called “Prepare the Night Before.” Keep it simple and do not add anything I did not tell you.
Then type everything that's bouncing around in your head.
School events. Appointments. Activities. Groceries. Permission slips. Laundry.
Let ChatGPT sort the pile.
6. Build Morning and Bedtime Routines
Try:
Create a simple morning routine for my [AGE]-year-old grandchild. We need to leave home by [TIME]. Include getting dressed, breakfast, teeth, hair, backpack and shoes. Make it realistic and easy for a child to follow.
You can use the same idea for bedtime.
7. Find the Words for Difficult Conversations
Sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing what we believe.
It's figuring out how to say it.
Try:
Help me explain this situation to my [AGE]-year-old grandchild in a calm, age-appropriate way. I want to be honest without frightening or overwhelming them. Here is the situation: [DESCRIBE WITHOUT PRIVATE IDENTIFYING DETAILS]
You can also ask:
“Make that warmer.”
“Make that shorter.”
“Give me three ways I could say it.”
8. Create Personalized Bedtime Stories
This is where AI becomes downright delightful. ✨
Try:
Write a seven-minute bedtime story for my [AGE]-year-old grandchild. Their name is [NAME OR NICKNAME], they love [INTEREST], and tonight I want the story to gently teach [LESSON]. End with a short loving affirmation.
Suddenly tonight's spelling test, camping trip or difficult day can become part of an adventure.
9. Create Activities You Can Do Together
Try:
Give me five inexpensive activities a grandparent and [AGE]-year-old grandchild can do together this afternoon. We have about [TIME] and they enjoy [INTERESTS]. Include at least two activities that do not involve screens.
AI should help create more connection, not more screen time.
10. Ask ChatGPT What You May Be Forgetting
This one is beautifully simple.
After making a plan, ask:
What am I forgetting?
Or:
What should I prepare ahead of time?
Or:
Turn this into a checklist.
Sometimes the greatest relief is not getting a brilliant answer.
It's having somewhere to put all the things spinning around in your head.
You Don't Need Perfect Prompts
A prompt is simply the instruction you give ChatGPT.
You do not need special vocabulary.
Tell it:
What is happening.
What you need help with.
Any details that matter.
Then keep talking to it.
Try these follow-ups:
- Make that simpler.
- Give me another idea.
- Explain it to a beginner.
- Give me one step at a time.
- Turn this into a checklist.
- Make this appropriate for an 8-year-old.
- Give me three choices.
- What am I forgetting?
A Quick Word About AI Safety
ChatGPT can make mistakes.
Avoid entering highly sensitive information such as passwords, Social Security numbers, financial account information or unnecessary identifying details about children.
For medical, legal, mental-health, school-policy or government-benefit questions, AI can help you organize your thoughts and questions, but important information should be confirmed with the appropriate qualified professional or official source.
